At least it's not a movie I guess but, alas, the new popularity probably means that I'll have to read the book now. I guess it could be worse. Does, however, remind me of the quotation from Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum, the definition of a "lunatic."
For him, everything proves everything else. The lunatic is all fixed ideas, and whatever he comes across confirms his lunacy. Whenever I read something about these "dark secrets" of the Catholic church (like The Da Vinci Code or The Last Templar), I think about Eco's novel. With all of the connections he and his protagonist create, it's no wonder many people become so fascinated with conspiracies.
I think Eco's novel beautifully shows the other side, though--that connections can be made if we look hard enough, no matter how absurd they seem.
And the harder you look, the more the connections begin to make sense...
