John McCain, Medievalist

Following up on "Barack Obama, Medievalist," I wonder how I ever missed this nugget. John McCain claims descent from Robert the Bruce and -- your friend and mine -- the man himself, Charlemagne. Of course, this is utter fantasy -- although proven repeatedly to be attractive fantasy. John McCain, so far as anyone can tell, is NOT related to either of those men and has no perceptible ties to the Middle Ages. And yet, there is this...

Noted, without comment.

Matt, thanks for plugging my little book, but why aren't you plugging your own instead? My copy recently arrived in the mail, and I'm hoping to find time to read it and post a blog-review between now and Christmas. Modern Medieval readers who are hesitating to buy the book should know that Amazon recently dropped the price to be competitive with Barnes & Noble...

But isn't Chuck far enough back that just about everyone's related to him?

How can he have no perceptible ties to the Middle Ages? Is he descended from a second Adam & Eve created in the late 16th Century or something?

Fair enough, Richard. The words just don't flow like they used to when I post at midight!

But, if we are to believe Obama though, perhaps like a new Athena, sprung from the head of President Bush... :-)
